Your Say: What is the best text editor?
A text editor is an important tool for most of us. And choosing the right text editor is important, very personal, and often controversial.
That became obvious when we asked which text editor you use back in October. 26 different text editors were mentioned, in 89 mentions altogether. And there was a lot of talk about customization, and the reasons for switching from one text editor to another. Many people seem to use more than one text editor.
We listed the Top 5 editors in the poll, and the two most-mentioned editors were neck and neck. So it’s time to remove all doubt. Vote for which text editor you think is best.
May the best man… ah, app… win!

I used Notepad++ for years when I was on a PC. I wish they had a version of it for Mac but I’ve settled quite nicely on Espresso.
You should try Sublime Text 2.
I used to be in the notepad++ camp, but after using Sublime Text 2 for the last week I had to vote for it. Sublime has really won me over.
All MacVim, all the time.
You can’t really compare a text editor like textmate to an all in one tool like coda.
PhpStorm all the way
http://www.jetbrains.com/phpstorm/download/
Actually any of their IDE’s are hands down the best. Built in refactoring, deployment and debugging tools will blow your mind. haha
As a guy who’s primarily a writer, my favorite text editors are iA Writer and the online Typerighter.com. Most of what I need is plain text writing with Markdown formatting and HTML export, and both are great for that.
BBEdit here. Simple. Opens everything. Fast.
I vote for Sublime as a new and very prosperious editor, but in the past years I have used Komodo Edit, simple, fast and very code inteligent, and very satisfied, but from time to time switch to sublime just for the little change we all need sometimes
)))
On a Windows machine, I used to use Notepad++ (cause it’s simply the best), but on Mac I went for TextMate after first trying out BBEdit for a while. I like it so far, but perhaps I’ll try out some of those others soon as well.
@Julian I guess that’s true, but for editing text files I prefer something extremely simple that boots fast over a beast with lots of features
I used to be a Notepad++ user but have switch over to Sublime Text 2 (registered) because of it’s slick, easy to use and cross platform design.
Sublime Text Editor is the best of all, without any doubt
Hehe, looks like Sublime is very popular (voted for it as well).
It’s a great editor, though still in its early stages – love it!
Smultron!! (OSX only)
I have been using it for years, the command line calling is superb and if the file needs sudo permissions then smultron ask you for them before saving. Give it a try, you will love it.
The only reason you don’t use Vim is because you don’t know how to use Vim.
I have a friend who’d say the only reason you use Vim is because you don’t know how to use Emacs.
By the way, I’ve been using Komodo Edit for the last year or so. But today I downloaded a bunch of the alternatives, and I’ve been taking them for a test drive. The jury’s still out on whether I’ll be switching to any of them – I like to take my time!
Emacs has a text editor? Who knew?
Love it! I think there’s a few in there, including Vim.
Best text editor? Whatever one works best for you. Offline, I prefer Geany and online I like ShiftEdit.
Espresso
But waiting for Coda2.
I dont get what all the hype around Sublime text is.
It doesnt even come with a live preview, which Espresso does.
Using Textmate, but Chocolat http://chocolatapp.com/ looks good also.
It’s still in beta, but I’m enjoying using Chocolat so far.
By far… Sublime text 2 I’m totally inloved with it !
Ultra Edit works well for us.
Been using Sublime text 2 lately and by far the best i have used
BBEdit won our poll. However, my personal favorite is Espresso.
Sublime Text 2 on a PC, but I am in love with Espresso for Mac, I’m not sure if that qualifies as a “text editor”
I’ve been using Sublime Text 2 for a while. Is the best text editor I’ve ever used on a Windows machine, very fast, clean and simple.
I have found Kate (Linux) to fulfill all my needs.
Notepad++ is solid and robust. It is free and has good support for bidirectional text (Arabic/Hebrew). I tried sublime text 2 and love its navigation tabs and generally how it feels while typing like the magic. But sublime has no bidirectional support for strings. Actually The differences between the two are very subtle ones and either one is great but sublime is more beautiful and notepad++ feels like it has been done in Java.
Brackets is really good as well as Adobe Edge
