Your Say: Mac or Windows?
Today we’ll ask the age-old question: Mac or Windows? It will be interesting to see which is most popular in the Envato community.
I’ve been keeping a tally in my head every time I publish an interview or “Meet the Staff” or workspace or desktop post. I think the race is very close.
I’d be keeping a tally on how many use Linux too, but I’m sure it’s already lost the race. But I’ve added an “other” category just in case. And you can select as many operating systems as you use.
So let the race begin. Which operating system do you use?

Linux =P because it’s easier to develop on.
+ various VirtualBox saved instances for Windows and Mac. Nice having a hibernated version of all adobe products (or other things like different web browsers) that can resume *very* quickly.
Linux FTW!
But I think my next non-development machine will be a Mac.
Mac, Mac and Mac
Get MOOM in MAS
OSX doesn’t maximize the way Windows does. I can go “full-screen” now with Lion, but I don’t really want a program taking over my entire screen. I just want it to maximize the traditional way with a single click. Such a small thing but it’s a deal-breaker for me.
Get MOOM in the Mac App Store, does what you want
Yeah, technically OSX doesn’t maximize the same way but most Mac users also don’t use it all that frequently. For the same function just click Cmd + Shift and click the + (or use Moom).
Mac and Windows.I find Windows is particularly more productive to me, for average use Mac comes easy and handy
For eye candy mac, for productivity/gaming windows.
Wow, I’m seeing a major slant in Mac there.
Since I switched to Mac I have peace of mind and will never look back
I have a Dell XPS with Windows 7 and a Macbook Pro with Lion and like them both. I do however favor the Windows OS
I don’t complain Windows 7 but just having the opportunity, I would like to purchase a Mac
I have worked on Mac and it’s nice.
I switched to Mac 3 months ago and I can honestly say that there’s not a huge difference between a Mac and PC (in fact I think the PC has an edge over many things) except for two things:
1. Apps!
2. Design
The only thing that would ever keep me from going back to a PC are the availability and ease of Mac apps. Hands down. It’s also very pretty.
+1.
I like Windows, Mac and Linux – in that order, but Mac and Linux being very close to each other.
Reason: As a PHP developer I honestly don’t care which OS to use when I’m using a desktop system. Usually everything works out of the box, no matter where I use and develop my projects.
For Rails I’ve to use a *NIX-based machine, because RoR on Windows is a mess (especially with MySQL). On my desktop I use Linux, but there is no better *NIX-based notebook than a Macbook Pro/Air. Perfect working Linux notebooks are almost non existing.
Oh, and since Windows 7 I really often think: “Why is this so complicated?” – when I work on OSX.
In my opinion Windows 7 is much, much easier to use than OSX.
Think different.
I’m on a Mac and I’m loving it
I was raised with a Mac so I guess that could bias me slightly, but I’ve worked on a windows during my highschool time.. And of course I’ve got (multiple) Windows machines lined up in Parallels, as well as two Linux distro’s
I use Linux myself. I have nothing against the others, they’re all fine for their target audience and intended purpose.
It saddens me to see someone buy a Mac just because they’re “cool” then get frustrated with the adjustment and get Windows installed on it. Use what is best for you and what you’re doing.
I use Linux because the filesystem integrates so well with my servers and the SSH support (especially with Guake) is far better than in Windows. Sure, I see some nice programs on Mac or Windows such as Coda, Textmate or PHPDesigner, but Netbeans works almost as good and everything else is perfect. For me.
My wife uses a Mac. She’s familiar with Windows, Linux and Mac and could use Windows with Creative Suite but she’s much faster on a Mac (shortcuts, window management etc). Others would be the exact reverse.
Mac all the way, never looked back.
Love my windows7 desktop and laptop. Can’t wait for Windows8 on tablets, pc.
windows and windows…windows
I’ve been running Macs and PCs side by side for almost 15 years now. I use the PC (which is now Windows 7 Professional running on BootCamp, btw) for Access database programming, and my Macs for everything else, especially my design work.
As Rick said, you have to use what works for you. Just part of picking the right tool for the job. Over the years I’ve found it easier to work on the Macs for all things creative. I’m happier when I’m on a Mac, and that helps me create better designs : )
+1 Use what works for you.
That said, I was raised on Windows and switched to Mac several years ago with no intentions of going back anytime soon.
Switched to Mac about four years ago after the Vista debacle. I use Parallels when I need to do WIndows testing. I’m not fanatic though. Windows 8 looks promising. If someone were to put it on decently designed hardware, I’d be willing to give it a try.
Windows 8 (the dev preview, at least) is great. The file copy dialog, and explorer in general, have been much improved.
I threw it on a 4 year old laptop to try it out and it runs pretty well. The metro thing doesn’t appeal to me and I still miss the start menu.
You don’t browse a menu tree to find a program anymore, you pretty much have to search unless it’s pinned in metro. That’s what bugs me about Unity too, they took away the conveniently browsable menu.
My Windows 7 machine is hugely powerfull and serves my needs. What else could one want.
I use both, and also Ubuntu.
I own a Mac, my gf own’s a Mac, her family only use Mac, my family use Mac. In short, Mac all the way
I use both frequently and I think anyone who ties themselves to one platform like a religion just needs to wake up
I’ve had ongoing critical issues with Windows Vista and Dell hardware, so I am ready to try a Mac.
I am a long-standing Windows veteran mainly because I am a Flash developer and also like to build my own computers. I have always stayed away from Mac’s because they equated to about twice the price for similar spec. More recently I have been using Linux a lot in my current role, but have not made the transition to Linux desktop. I have stuck with Windows because the Flash IDE runs on there and I have never had time to setup Virtual OS’s, etc
Now I am starting a new job and they all use Mac’s. I will give it a go, benefit of the doubt. My job will mainly be coding for Web, so we will see…
At home I’m working on PC but on my day job I’m working on Mac. Because the Mac is a PowerPc G5 and the PC is an Intel i3, I hate the Mac…
Linux forever.
Windows. I have worked on a 27″ iMac, besides the huge screen and the terminal I couldn’t find any advantages to Mac and especially Mac Os X.
I sold the Mac for only 50€ loss and bought a Alienware m15x laptop and a desktop with 22″ inch monitor for almost the same money
I use all. Macbook Pro, great for Creative Suite, general simplicity and reliability. I VM Win 7 & Ubuntu. Win 7 for some windows only apps, and Ubuntu for dev where I want to match my server deployments. I also develop on OSX as well. I feel this is the perfect combo, Apple laptops are the best, so it’s a hardware choice first, and then as far as software goes use all 3 OS’s and use the best OS for the job you need.
windows… but only cos i ve used them all my life. Use them at college and i can use them happily just wont buy one
Use macs at college*
I’ve gotta vote for Mac, I currently own an i7 iMac 27″ and absolutely love it. Thought I have a Windows 7 laptop. Macs are highly suggested for web-designers/graphic designers.
Windows 7 on IMac
Been using macs until last summer when i switched from my dell i5 to iMac 27 i7 which probably are not really comparable
Apart from that i have to say that, as a person that loves design/designing, i really love the Mac and the OS that ships with it. In my special case it’s also much more stable than my old windows pc working with both photoshop and after effects. Overall i’d say use the platform you’re the most productive with! For me that’s mac for others it might be windows or linux.
*since last summer. sry
Windows for development,
Mac for server administration.
I am a programmer.
Well, what I have to say won’t help towards which is best.
I do prefer the Mac, but the cost of a Mac makes that difference. On the PC, I really like the Xara software, which is not available for the Mac, but as a film maker, the Mac is wonderful. of course, Premiere on the PC isn’t so bad.
The Mac tends not to hang so much though, meaning I can just get on with my work without waiting for the ‘Not Responding’ message to go, though it is much better in Windows 7.
Mac for consumption, Windows + Nix for production.
Servers – Linux – CentOS
Code Dev – Linux – SUSE/RH
Graphic Dev – Windows7
General Entertainment – Android ICS
Stealth / Pen Testing – Linux – Backtrack
Nothing better to do – Chrome OS
Door/Window Prop – Mac
Table Leg Prop – ipod
Mac will become open source before I buy an apple product
I’m a Linux guy living in a Windows world and my Anti-Brain Washing device is out of battery’s.
Mac – I would never go back…
