I have 43. But that includes a folder called “Disorganised Desktop Rubbish” where I throw things from my desktop when I clean up—and that has 94 more icons. One day I’ll organise it!

  2. Batfan on the 6th April

Does ‘Too Many’ count as an answer? :P

  3. Nate on the 6th April

Right now, 19. I’ve rarely gone above 20.

  4. Jonathan Foucher on the 6th April

6, and because I have an SD card mounted

  5. Gabu_ on the 7th April

I don’t have any! I even don’t have the macintosh one ^^ sometimes when I create new folders I use an app called camuflaje witch desapears all my icons!

  6. Seba on the 7th April

I have exactly 224 icons. Including some folders with “Stuff” inside too

  7. morella sanchez on the 7th April

I have 44 and I also have a folder where i put everything wheni coul´dn´t see the wallpaper. I usually organize it when i´m on vacation or holidays. I try but all that I download from the net end on my desktop.

  8. Salfrico on the 7th April

Apologies, but that photo above irritates me!!! I have one folder ‘ Desktop Items’ that I either need to acces very quickly or that am working on currently. Otherwise I have 4 dedicated internal hard drives:
    - Main Mac HD
    - Photography
    - Graphic Design
    - Video

  9. Connor Crosby on the 7th April

I usually have about 10-20 icons (including hard drive icons).

  10. Bobby RIvera on the 7th April

I turned my desktop into a virtual vision board with full screen rotating images every minute so there are 0 icons or anything on my desktop.. did I mention I have OCD!?!?

  11. Gene on the 7th April

Currently I have 6, but they are either .jpg’s or .psd’s. When I clean up, I tend to only leave the HD icon.

  12. Anthony Bynoe on the 7th April

    I have 24.

  13. Jim Anderson on the 7th April

I currently have one between all four of my monitors; it’s a temp/scratch file that gets used fairly often.

  14. Bryan on the 7th April

Omg that desktop is freaking me out! I have maybe 12 and that annoys me greatly. I have such the need for a tidy computer desktop and filing structure; need to translate this t real world at some point!

  15. Mike McMullan on the 7th April

Other than a few drive icons which appear automatically when various drives are plugged in I have 0 icons on my desktop.

  16. Atosark on the 7th April

    Exactly 0. I use a categorized dock.

  17. Krishna on the 7th April

8 hard drive icons on my desktop – files and folders are tucked neatly away on my drives.

  18. James on the 7th April

I have 0 icons on my desktop. Anything I use often are pinned to my taskbar that I keep at the top of the screen and it is set to auto hide. There is no reason to have all of that clutter on the screen. And yes Win7 taskbar is better than OS X’s dock.

  19. Diana on the 7th April

Not too much, but sometimes ,a lot, I try to organize my desktop, by the way, I think is not good to have too much icons on the desktop, this makes the pc slow, (start), I don´t know if this happens on a Mac.

    Diana

  20. Daniel Freeman on the 7th April

Currently 170. Infrequently, I archive everything into a folder named “pile” + the date.

  21. Kate on the 7th April

I have 20 at work. They’re all useless, as I never click them. I always use my start/task bar (Windows 7).

  22. Dave on the 7th April

    Zero.
When I plug in my harddrive for backup I have 2, and I occasionally have a .Dmg for an installation, which I can see to remove right away because nothing else is there.

    I’m a desktop minimalist.

  23. Andrew-David on the 7th April

I have 3 – The HDD icon, a transmit server droplet for quick access, and a pdf I have yet to read.

  24. Mario Cuba on the 7th April

    None =)

I always have my desktop cleaned up – I use it as a “inbox” of incoming stuff from the internet and external drives. At the end of the day, I put it all into place. I try to keep the desktop cluttering to a minimum.

  25. Tylor Skory on the 7th April

None. Occasionally I use it to hold files I am currently working with. But for the most part, I don’t have any icons on it. I feel like I work better when it’s completely clutter free.

  26. Matthew Guay on the 7th April

None, I like to keep my desktop clean :)

  27. Bryce Wisekal on the 7th April

Have exactly 14 icons nicely laid out and organized. Than my folders are nicely organized and ready for me to use. Kind of a neat freak I think lol Organization is good though :) Makes for an easy day IMO.

  28. Dan on the 7th April

    2. iDisk and Time Machine

  29. Ash Connell on the 7th April

I have 3 icons on my desktop. Recycle, My Folder, My Computer.

I like having it clean, my taskbar only has firefox, everything i need is pinned to my start menu!

  30. rafael on the 7th April

Well, there is one text file for a college work and a folder named “_temp”.

  31. Rina Miele on the 7th April

Currently my desktop looks like than the screenshot above. Every few weeks or so I clean things up, but it always gets out of hand. Always. Sometimes I pretend to tidy up and throw everything in a folder, “to be sorted later” (@Seba’s comment above)

The funny thing is I have extremely organized folders on my HDD. It just takes a long time for things to get put where they belong.

It is insanity. I need an intern.

  32. Charlie Apps on the 7th April

    Too many…
Generally the number is dependent on my work load.

  33. Tiyo Kamtiyono on the 7th April

Mine is 18 icons, but there are some more 30 items consist of images, folders, text files, etc. Total 48 things, not messy enough :D

  34. Sunny Singh on the 7th April

16, which is pretty clean for me.

  35. chrismccoy on the 7th April

recycle bin thats all ;) everything is on the taskbar that i need about 25 apps

  36. Kalpesh B on the 7th April

50 icons for me! Love to have 0 but every time I clean my desktop it instantly fills up again.

  37. Goncalo Espinha on the 7th April

My task bar has 9, but my desktop varies between 20 and 30 usually.

Not bad, for a large scale monitor… I guess… anyway, everything is organized and active, and in my opinion, the issue isn`t about how many icons you have, but how are they all organized…

You can have 40 icons on the desktop, but I`ve got powerful pc and they are all organized and active, you can save a whole bunch of time there.

  38. Drew Douglass on the 7th April

Zero, gotta keep it clean. :)

  39. Daniel on the 7th April

I have about 50 or so icons on my desktop. There relatively organized by what file type and use. Such as anything photoshop goes in one folder while stuff for coding goes in another. I like to keep my desktop organized as much as possible.

  40. Ruby on the 7th April

    I have 4 desktop icons. I like it clutter-free

  41. Jordan on the 7th April

I have 0 icons on my desktop, just because I feel things get lost when they’re on the desktop. I launch everything using Launchy, or Spotlight if I’m using my Mac Mini.

  42. David on the 7th April

I got an OS without Desktop!

  43. Elliott Richmond on the 7th April

Way too many :D I have an alias on my desktop called ‘desktop items’ every couple of weeks everything gets dumped in there and once every couple of months the folder either gets purged or archived. It the easiest way for me to keep on top of things.

  44. zgravity on the 7th April

None, Only a folder if I’m working for something for a longer time, or my iPod,s icon if I charge it.

  45. Pieter V on the 7th April

1 folder and 1 txt file of 2 projects i should work on

  46. Vanessa on the 7th April

Right now – about 7. Every night I clear the desktop completely (everything has a place) but during the day I usually collect up to about 20. Again, I clear them every night it’s a bit of a compulsion since I got a mac – because I want everything looking pretty :)

  47. Rasmus on the 7th April

0 – And I make a great effort in keeping it with that :)

  48. Duncan on the 7th April

Currently, I have 2. One folder titled “Games” (which I rarely use) and a link to an online guitar tuner (which I use a lot).

All my actual work folders are hidden away via the taskbar linking into my dropbox folder.

Oh, and the trashcan. But I never count that.

  49. Neil on the 7th April

    I have 0…None. Ever. I just can’t do it.

  50. Chris on the 7th April

    All te sixes – clicketty-click = 66

  51. MSFX on the 7th April

omg how can you people live, I have nothing on my desktop, not even the recycle bin :)

  52. Tom Howe on the 7th April

    One word: Bumptop.

  53. Guillaume Denormandie on the 7th April

    None

Who uses the desktop anyways ?

Oh and icons would prevent me from seeing my awesome wallpaper

  54. Alicia on the 7th April

I have 0 icons on my desktop, except for the CD icon that is automatically shown when I have a CD in the drive. I have one gadget and that’s for the weather and I use my dock for any programs that I use regularly. I cannot stand icons on my desktop.

  55. rafael armstrong on the 7th April

Folders and icons– all told– 75 (which is a lot more than I thought, and it’s prompting me to pencil in some cleanup/”filing” for tomorrow).

  56. Greg Burrus on the 7th April

I have 18. Usually I have only one for recycle bin. But have Stardock Fences and with a simple double click of the desktop all is hidden (except for 4 gadgets) which is great.

  57. Mohamed Zahran on the 7th April

Just 2 icons, My Computer & Recycle bin

  58. Seich on the 7th April

I’ve got 12 but, 4 of those are temporary and will be disappearing soonish.. I usually keep around 6 – 10 icons.

  59. jason on the 7th April

    none – ever =)

  60. Matt W on the 7th April

    1 = recycle bin.

The only time I actually see my desktop is when I reboot. Otherwise several applications cover it.

  61. Sitebase on the 7th April

It’s hard but I try to keep it as close too zero as possible.

  62. alexpatton66 on the 7th April

Hi I’m using windows 7 and i just have 1 and I can’t get rid of it. Guys does any one knows how to get rid of the trash can on the desktop? I would like to trash it out ! How ever you have no idea how many files I have on my downloads folder. ( 173 ) and also how many versions of the same file becuase of the same thing! It gives me the creeps now to go there and look for something!

    • Greg Burrus on the 8th April

If you right click the desktop goto personalize, then click change desktop icons in the panel on the left. You can control the desktop icons like trash and computer.

  63. Nuni on the 7th April

    I have none !

The icons would look so ennoying on my pretty wallpaper. My wallpaper changes automatically every hour and I have a huge list of great pictures.

I have a windows gadget where I can start my most used applications easy.

  64. Elke on the 8th April

Too many – I have always a messy desktop – all this screenshots … oh Dear, oh Dear …

  65. Aldo on the 8th April

You know that the less icons/files you have on your desktop the faster your Mac OS boots?

  66. LGLab on the 8th April

No icons, just folders for current jobs.

  67. Christoph Spiegl on the 9th April

Just the mounted drives and files I am currently moving around.

Most of the time: 2 (iMac-Drive / TimeMachine)
    Other times: iMac-Drive / TimeMachine / CompactFlash-Card / Other external Drives

All other files are in folders and not on the desktop.

  68. Carlos Viloria on the 9th April

    I can’t count, there are many!!! :D

  69. Peewee1002 on the 10th April

    Currently around 72.

I have the 27″ imac so it only covers just less than a third of my screen.

    No worries.

  70. Jorde Vorstenbosch on the 11th April

    3:

    1. Harddrive
    2. Windows XP, link from parallels
    3. USB Storage

    This is on a mac.

  71. Obed on the 11th April

1, the recycle bin. I like to keep my desktop free of icons.

  72. Holden Christiansen on the 11th April

1, my “Macintosh HD” icon. It also shows disk space remaining.

  73. Georges on the 12th April

1 folder on top right, with about 5 other folders in it.

  74. pranav on the 16th September
