Are You Still Linking to FlashDen?

Last year Envato’s first marketplace FlashDen changed its name to ActiveDen. We didn’t want to break thousands of existing links, so we’ve been forwarding them ever since. A bit like an Aussie farmer rounding up stray sheep. Unfortunately this hasn’t encouraged you to be overly speedy in updating them. There are still sheep in the south paddock.

Well, now’s the time! We’re no longer able to forward your bad links, and any links to FlashDen will now go to a generic landing page. So hunt out those old links and update them!

Be sure to check anywhere you may have referral links. That could be:

  • Adobe Exchange
  • Hotscripts
  • your site
  • anywhere else you may have links.

Read more on this forum thread. The farmers of Australia – and ActiveDen site manager Lance – thank you!

Sure authors may update their links, but what about the thousands of other links that won’t be updated? Is actionscript.org going to update all the times someone posted a link to flasden? Is the non-author who blogged about an awesome file 1 ear ago going to update the link?

This will be bad for ActiveDen. Less direct traffic, and dead links will hurt ActiveDen Google listings. And what’s the benefit? Not having to keep your directories in harmony with the old flashden? Large price to pay for this convenience IMO.

And is it *really* that hard to set up a 301 redirect? (If I’m not mistaken, Envato runs their sites on NGINX instead of Apache, which makes things a little different but not really any more difficult.) You just rewrite flashden.net/[anything] to activeden.net/[anything]. More backlinks, even to a forwarded domain, are a *good* thing…

Yes, I agree with joe; it really sucks.. But I know the good people at Envato have also been upset about it – I believe it was Adobe that claimed “FlashDen” is using the word “Flash” which is an Adobe product, so blame Adobe I guess – it’s pretty snotty in my opinion. But I just wanted to say thanks Envato for giving us the heads up on the broken links! :)

@redwall_hp – it’s incredibly obvious that you have no idea what you are talking about.
