Are you a professional? The sort of professional that other professionals love to work with? It’s time for some self-evaluation.
So grab a cuppa and sit down for a chat with Aetuts+ Editor Adam Everett Miller. He gets very up close and personal with you in this Aetuts+ video, which will strike a chord with all creatives, not just those who are into video.
In today’s post I’m going to do something a little different and just having a nice sit down chat. I’ve never done something like this in the 3 years I’ve been running this site. I thought this might be a nice chance for me to share a few red flags I’ve noticed that tell me whether I would want to work with you more than once.
Are you a professional?

thank you
Good thoughts…
These are really good points! I have a problem with being timid around people but I’ve noticed that it only happens when I’m around other timid people. If I’m around positive, confident and happy people, their attitude rubs off on me and I feel a lot more comfortable.
Great post Adam, these ideas apply to so many fields !
Nice 15 minutes, really enjoyed it.
I tend to judge people on how much they´re willing to share their knowledge. I see developers, many of them, tend to be jealous with their abilities… more than that, some tend to be … how to say it… monopolizing? like they want to be the only people on the world capable of doing cool things.
For me there´s no cooler thing than sharing knowlegde, I enjoy teaching someone how to do a cool trick with jquery. That way everytime I work with someone, it´s a win-win for both at the end of the day.
Cool ideas! Last two are very important in my case.
Excellent advice, well presented. Thanks!
This is a really great post and I like the format. For me I would definitely add people who micro-manage or force direct you. Probably comes under the not being shy part and explaining up front that you expect them to trust you with the job they’re paying you to do.
Great video! Please do more!
“You suck as a human being and I never wanna work with you!” Oh damn, really? I’m gonna cry! Nah, I’m just kidding!
I seem to be guilty of points 3 and 5 (timidity and money)… You’re absolutely right and I’m gonna change those. It’s a pretty good idea with that “Friend Card”, I’m gonna apply it and see what happens. Up until now I did all those three things (good, cheap, fast) for friends and it’s probably why they take me for a fool now. Thanks for the heads up! Great post!
Excellent! Short, concise and very well stated.
Blessings,
-Ruben
1 thing that tells me you are not a professional? You say the word “ughm” / “Uh” over 50 times within 15 minutes.
I’ve learnt so much from this. Inspiring and educative it is. Thanks
Great post, I like this format. Hope to see more.
You are a twit. Pthhht
And immature, too.
Definitely, my point is the last. I always have problems to talk about money, and I don’t talk about it immediately. Very bad abit. People think they will have thir work for free or something like that, when you don’t apply for that point FACE TO FACE! Yes, I definitely have to improve it
This was time well spent.
First, Yea, Don’t be a Pill, cus you’ll suck to be around!
Don’t be enfeebled & overly polite either, cus you’ll suck to be around too! (Achh)
Don’t be shy, because your life will suck! – *true
Remember that “of all of the things you can ware, it’s confidence that will look the best on you.”- *true
Be true to yourself and others because, in the end, it’s what’s real..
Be quick with a basic guideline for what-ever you offer and offer a Friend card if appropriate.
That’s great stuff Adrian – Thanks.
