Seeing into iCloud with Plain Cloud

iCloud promises much. Apple build the service not only to store your content, but to ensure that content is available on whatever device you’re using at the time. It gives you an easy way to keep app settings and the documents you’re using synced between your devices using the same apps, but since iCloud syncs files specifically for each app, it makes it hard to use documents in other apps.

This can be frustrating to experienced users used to moving between apps for different elements of their work. Here, the simplicity of iCloud can frustrate more experienced users by hiding some of the complexity of cloud storage. Some apps allow ways to move files out of iCloud and to your local device, but it would be nice to be able to do this from Finder directly. Plain Cloud is a simple and free app that promises simple access to your iCloud in Finder. Let’s see if this is the solution we need to solve iCloud’s complexity.

Done Not Done: Your Bucket List For Movies, Books, and Music

There are so many good books to read, movies to watch, and music to listen to. I don’t know about you, but I always find myself without enough time in the day to be able to sit down and just dive into a good book. Then, there are those times when I hear a good song on the radio and I try to remember it so I can buy it later, but that never works. I am not sure if it’s because I am getting older (I am really not that old), but I cannot seem to remember things unless I write them down.

I have been using a web app called Done Note Done to jot down some of the books, music, and movies that I want to check out. It has been a good way for me to keep track of all the things that I want to get to later – with a dash of social networking thrown in. Chime: Notification Center for the Web

Unified notifications are everywhere these days, and are built into the latest version of every major mobile and desktop OS. On the web, though, notifications are a mixed bag. Chrome supports notifications from web apps, but you’ll have to have your favorite app open to get notifications, and few support them as is. You’re better off relying on email notifications and keeping Gmail open in Chrome all day if you don’t want to miss out on anything.

HomeSnap: Real Estate Information At Your Fingertips

With the current state of the economy, I’ve been surveying the real estate market in my area to see if I can find a great bargain. The problem is as a first time home buyer I’ve come to find that the process is way more complicated than it should be. Trying to research and compare homes across numerous websites can be a total time killer, not to mention quite the chore. On top of that, I often found myself trying to memorize addresses of houses I saw on that market so I could look them up on the computer when I got home.

So, when I came across HomeSnap Real Estate and saw that it so casually declared, “Just snap a photo of any home, nationwide, to identify it and find out how much it’s worth,” I was intrigued. Part of me was skeptical at first, but there were enough good reviews to keep me interested (and it doesn’t hurt that it’s free).

Let the Internet Be Your TV with Frequency

Ever since I decided to cut the cord and get rid of cable a little over a year ago, I’ve found myself watching a lot more videos online. I soon realized that since I was now forcing myself to do this, there was a good amount of video content online that could help me get my limited TV fix. I have also been noticing that many of the news websites are starting to put more video content online than ever before, which is a welcome sign for people like me.

IMDb: Now Showing, a Sleek Redesign

If you’ve ever used the Internet and like movies, I’m sure you’ve heard of IMDb. Since it’s launch in 1990, IMDb has been the de facto place to go when you’re trying to figure out where you’ve seen that one actor before (tip, it’s always Spaceballs). When smartphones became a thing, IMDb was a must have bookmark so you could also settle debates with your friends on the go. In short, IMDb is simply part of the small percentage of websites that’s ingrained into society.

One of the few shortcomings of IMDb’s iPad app in the past is a lack of user friendliness. When you launch the app, there’s simply a lot of noise to overcome and it takes more than a few seconds to figure out the navigation setup. But the developers behind IMDb’s iPad app looked to rectify this issue with the release of version 3.0, which offers up a complete redesign. I’m going to level with you here: I get most of my news from Facebook and Twitter. Google Currents: A Second Read

One of the merits of mobile technology is its ability to be used as a source of information, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. In the era of mobile technology we currently find ourselves in, there’s so much information to digest that it becomes rather overwhelming. BitDefender USB Immunizer, Your Ally Against “Autorun” Infections

Taking advantage of the rise of portable devices, an ever-growing number of viruses designed to affect them are being found. By default, whenever you plug in a storage device in your computer, Windows automatically enables a auto-play function, which runs the a file called “autorun.ini”. Such malware uses “autorun.ini” as a vector of transmission and, through that auto-play, infect your computer.

Most paid antivirus suites scan USB devices for viruses as they are plugged into the computer, which does not happen with most free ones. If your antivirus does not provide such feature, USB Immunizer, developed by BitDefender Labs, might be the perfect solution to improve your security, as it automatically disables the auto-play function and injects a vaccine into your device, leaving it perfectly immunized against such infections.

Facebook+ Lite Breaks Out of Browsers

It may seem strange that the first thing the store page for Facebook+ Lite tells you is that the app lets you scroll through your newsfeed vertically – rather than the side to side scrolling that has been adopted by the Windows 8 Start screen and the vast majority of apps.

This may seem like a minor selling point – although the app is actually free – but it certainly gets things off to a good start for anyone who is slightly resistant to the new app format. Facebook is constantly open in a browser tab on my desktop, and I’ll try any app that grants me easy, constant access to the social network.

In a bid to try to keep up to date with my friends’ updates, news from all of the companies I ‘like’ and everything else that goes on on Facebook, I’ve tried everything from Facebook Messenger to browser extensions such as Facebook Notifications.

Nothing I’ve tried has ended up remaining installed for very long, and I always resort to keeping a tab pinned in Chrome so my social networking fix is never far away. Working with Windows 8 means that there are now more apps to try out, so I just had to try out Facebook+ Lite.

GOM Audio: Lightweight Player for Playlists

In the late 90s and early 2000s, it was nearly impossible to find a PC that didn’t have Winamp installed on it. The music player with its sparse interface and plethora of plugins was everybody’s favourite. Its simplicity and ease-of-use for a non-techie was an instant sell, while the audiophiles were thrilled with the options it offered.

Since then, there has been no shortage of music players released, and while Foobar comes closest to capturing the glory of Winamp of old, it doesn’t quite match up. Try giving Foobar to someone who isn’t tech-savvy and see them struggle with it.

I’ve long been on the lookout for something that had the simplicity of the old Winamp, but had a modern and easy interface, so that my mom could use it. And it needed to be light so that it can run well on her netbook.

Gom Player still is my favourite movie player, so when they announced an audio player, I just had to take a look. So does Gom Audio match up to the Winamp of old?

I’ve been using Bvckup beta for well over a year now and it’s about time it received some recognition for reliably sorting out my backups without ever getting in the way.
