I try to automate as much as possible, both in the real world and on my computer, as I find myself staring at my screen for more that ten hours a day. My house lights turn themselves on and off, my outlets power down to save energy, and the files on my MacBook Pro are doing all sorts of things while I’m not looking.

Why, you ask? Because if not, my Downloads folder would take over my hard disk, all of my MP3s would be on my Desktop instead of in iTunes, and my MacBook Pro would be 73% cat gifs. I need something to automatically manage all of my files while I’m doing real work. Sorter is just such an application. It monitors folders for file changes and then takes the actions you want to keep your Mac fighting like a champ.

Gaze at the Stellar 100,000 Stars

There are some fantastic web apps made for Google Chrome, thanks to the Chrome team’s dedication to showing off the power of web apps in their browser. We recently took a look at the new Chrome Legos, and 100,000 Stars is another great Chrome app that’s recently come out, fresh from the minds of the Google Data Arts Team.

It’s an interactive visualization of the stars in our “neighborhood” of the universe, and it’s an incredibly humbling and beautiful experience. You don’t have to use Chrome to run it, either — I had some success with the latest version of Firefox, and any browser that supports WebGL should be able to run it.

If there is one thing that mars the joy of giving a gift, it’s actually thinking one up. I don’t know about you, but personally, I always prefer asking the person for a few things he or she wants, and then picking the best out of that. Hopflow: RSS Goes Social

One of the things that I love about the web is that everything is so instantaneous. It has literally changed the way that we get our news and information. I hardly ever watch the news anymore because I can pull up just about any major news site and get real time stories at my fingertips. There is no need to wait for the nightly newscast any more.

With this, developers have continually tried to come up with ways to develop apps for us to use so that we can get our daily news fix. We first had the RSS reader and now we are starting to move toward what is considered “social news.” Twitter, more so than Facebook, has opened this door for news to become more interactive for us, the reader.

Poll and Analyze the World with Yacket

We’re always seeking out new ways to learn what other people think – whether you need an opinion on which app you should choose or have questions concerning a small business you want to start. Large companies and other major organizations have teams at their disposal to accomplish this. They’re able to question and analyze the results of asking their questions of large groups of people relevant to their organization or cause. Obviously the majority of us can’t afford such teams, so we’re left to our own devices. We can try asking groups like our Facebook friends, but those groups can be fairly homogenous. Yacket is a cool new web app which aims to provide a way for the majority of us to ask questions and get answers from a variety of people.

Yacket is a new survey/polling site powered by user’s questions. Ask any question you can think of, and it’s placed on the site. Visitors to Yacket can then answer the poll, and any data that Yacket knows about them is utilized in the analysis and breakdown of the answers. You can view anonymous results of how users answer based upon various factors, including gender, age, religion and much more. It’s an interesting premise and I got into it pretty quickly. Highlight, Bookmark and Share Web Pages with Annotary

For the longest time now, Evernote has been the go-to service if you want to conduct any research on the web. And why not, with the plethora of options that it offers. But personally, I’ve found that it lacks the simplicity to let me use the app to collaborate with others. Evernote is great for power users and I swear by it, but every time I’ve worked in a project group with others who aren’t that tech-savvy, it’s a stumbling block and we end up switching back to a long Gmail thread that’s messy and hard to keep a track of.

That was the main reason Annotary piqued my interest when I came across it. The simplicity it offers is unparalleled in other apps, be it Evernote, Scrible or anything else. And when I actually did work on an assignment with a tech-challenged friend using Annotary, he didn’t find it the least bit intimidating and is now using it as his default bookmarking service for all, irrespective of research projects.

500px: Quality Photography Comes to the iPhone

Flickr used to be the king of photo sharing on the Internet. Lately, however, it’s been declining as services such as 1x, 500px and SmugMug have come into play. Google+ has also become a very popular place to find good photographs thanks to well-known lensmen like Trey Ratcliff. Everyone has their own cup of tea, and 500px has always been mine because the community is superior to that of Flickr. Matthew Guay of Mac.AppStorm calls it the “Dribbble of photography.”

At the beginning of the year, I reviewed 500px’s iPad app, calling it “the best photography on your tablet.” The professional photo sharing service just updated its app to accommodate the iPhone, with beautiful photos that are optimized for the Retina display and many other creations that can be found on the website. Instragrab: Your New Favorite Instagram Companion

So, I love Instagram. I can honestly say I waste at least twenty minutes a day looking through my feed and “liking” my favorite photos. And there are always a few ‘grams that really stand out, and while I have “liked” them the only thing I can really do to save them is a screen capture, which isn’t very helpful when I want to repost or share. Hipmunk: Flight and Hotel Search

Hipmunk is a young start-up specializing in the travel industry. The company launched in 2010 and has been concentrating on building Web and Mobile applications to help its users find and book flights and hotels. Hipmunk offers a pretty solid web platform, but also applications for iOS and Android.

The start-up has recently raised $15 million in a series B round of funding, which rises its total amount of funding to $20 million. Its CEO, Adam Goldstein, wants to focus the company efforts on building tools and products related to the travel industry.

The Wider Image Offers a Different Perspective

The Wider Image, from Reuters, is one of the most interesting iPad apps to come from the news category in quite some time. Initially, I wrote it off as “just another” photography app like The Guardian Eyewitness (which is also brilliant, in case anybody is wondering), but after spending some serious time with the app, I can say that The Wider Image is an entirely different beast.

The Wider Image presents news stories from around the world using mostly images, but occasionally presents audio and video as well. What separates the app from other like-minded photography news apps is the level of interaction it offers you with the media. Instead of bringing up-to-the-minute news updates, The Wider Image wants to bring you carefully-chosen articles designed to take full advantage of your iPad’s touch-centric capabilities.

Gmail: Redesigned & Featured Filled

When it hit the news that Google acquired Sparrow, a very popular third-party email app at the time, there was a harsh outcry by tech blogs and social media. Users were saddened by the notion that their beloved app would essentially be abandoned and stripped for parts. Unlike most app developers, the team at Sparrow was very good about collaborating with users in order to continually improve the app, which users really admired; so, the outcry was understandable.

At this point you may be wondering if I’ve forgotten that I’m reviewing an iPad app, since Sparrow is only available for the iPhone. Rest assured, I haven’t. If you’ve ever used Sparrow on the iPhone you know that the development team behind the app is obviously very talented, but when they shifted gears to work on the Gmail app, post buyout, I began to wait anxiously as I wanted to see if they’d be up to the challenge of fixing Google’s all but failed first attempt at developing a native Gmail app. Now that version 2.0 of Gmail has been released, maybe now I can find out.

Customize Your Twitter Experience With Tweedle

There are many Twitter applications on the Play Store, from the official Twitter application, to Plume, Tweetdeck or Seesmic. All of these have their own style and functionality. In Tweetdeck, you can customize the font and the number of columns in the application as well as connect to other services like Facebook and Foursquare. Seesmic has a similar feature set but uses a different UI style. Plume follows a Holo-like look and offers an impressive — and slightly daunting — amount of features.

The only major downside in most of these applications is that they lack UI color customization. Tweedle is a Twitter application that tries to close this gap with full UI theming freedom. However, it’s still in development and major updates are slightly sparse as the developer considers this his side-project.

Snapseed: Mobile Photo Editing, Evolved

Originally an iOS app, Snapseed garnered quite a following for its powerful photo editing capabilities and also won a few “App of the Year” awards from Apple. In September 2012, Google bought Nik Software, the developer company behind the app and a mere three months later, we have an Android version of the app available to us for free. On a side note, Google also made the iOS version of the app free along with the Android release.

But before I delve into this review, let me get one obvious explanation out of the way – Snapseed is not an Instagram competitor from Google. Instagram, if you didn’t know, is a photo sharing app that lets you apply color effects to your photos and share them directly from your mobile devices. It thrives on its social sharing and community feature, while Snapseed does not have any social features of its own. It is also a more extensive photo editing app than a way to apply readymade filters to your photos.

So with that out of the way, let’s dig into what this latest offering from Google that everyone is talking about really is.

Janetter – The New Best Desktop Twitter Client?

Twitter, as pretty much everyone now knows, is way more than just another social network. Possibly, the fastest growing network in the online world, Twitter acts as an instant real-time window to everything happening in the world for it’s users thereby imploring them to be online 24×7. Now, most people usually do a lot of tweeting on the go, from their cell phones which is helped by there being a vast array of feature-rich Twitter clients for most mobile ecosystems. The same however, cannot be said about desktop Twitter clients which is a shame since most of us also spend a lot of time on our laptops/desktops and reaching out for the cell every time you receive a mention or need to send a tweet is way too tedious.

The number of desktop Twitter clients is far and few and most of them are resource-hogging and heavy. While I don’t have anything against Tweetdeck, Seismic, Hootsuite, etc but I needed just a Twitter client, not a one stop app filled with all the social networks in the world. This is when I discovered Janetter, a lightweight, smooth and feature filled app which is a worthy contender to be called the best desktop Twitter client.
