Lion Update Causes Your Passwords to Be Stored in Plain Text

In a recent update to OS X Lion, an Apple programmer inadvertently left a debug flag in the latest build of the operating system that turns on a system-wide debug log file. The file stores the user’s login information in plain text. The information not only contains the user’s password, but is it also in an unencrypted area.

While Apple is currently testing and pushing out preview releases of OS X Mountain Lion to developers, There are still many Leopard-running individuals out there who have yet to upgrade to the latest version of OS X. Due to this, Apple is encouraging remaining customers of MobileMe to upgrade to Lion and iCloud with a free copy of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for those still running 10.5 Leopard.

iBooks Author Released: Start Publishing with Freedom

Apple has released the free, yes free, iBooks Author app. The OS X application is aimed at any author wanting to create any type of ebook.

The app features a number of templates that are available for authors to quickly get started on their next project. Video and audio can be dragged right into the project’s window. You can also interact with other applications such as Keynote, for adding slides, iBooks, for previewing the ebook and iTunes for syncing. There is also a neat feature that lets you preview a book on the iPad via the USB sync cable.

OS X Mountain Lion Announced

In an unprecedented move, Apple have announced the next version of their Mac operating system in advance. Check it out in Apple’s video above. This seems to be another update where iOS features are merged into the desktop operating system.

It’s interesting that they’ve named this operating system “OS X Mountain Lion”, dropping the “Mac” name. There’s all sorts of speculation about what that means. What do you think?
