Using Vimeo Embeds in Item Previews – And Why Our Community Rocks!

by posted in Authors
Apr 13

We recently made a post about how and when to use embedded videos from social video sites, as part of our ongoing series about our Content Policy and using assets in marketplace items.

You can find that post here. Now we, like our authors, really like Vimeo! But unfortunately their terms of service are quite strict when it comes to saying no to all ‘commercial’ use of Vimeo.  That’s why in our previous post we thought it best to recommend not to use Vimeo embeds in your marketplace items.

And that’s where our fantastic, engaged community comes in.  Thanks to our author CodingJack, who took the initiative to discuss this with Vimeo, Vimeo has clarified that they are OK with authors using embeds from Vimeo. Here is how to do it:

  1. Only use Vimeo embed in your item preview (or live demo).
  2. Only use the embed to show how the item can be functional with a Vimeo embed when implemented by the buyer.
  3. Only use Vimeo videos that comply with Vimeo’s content guidelines (see http://vimeo.com/guidelines) and don’t use content that is selling a product or service. (Even if content like that is on Vimeo, it may not yet have been picked up and removed by Vimeo yet, so your best bet would be to avoid it.)

We’re not sure who to love more – CodingJack and our community, or Vimeo!

Using Photos of People and Celebrities in Items

by posted in Authors, General
Apr 10

Celebrity PhotoMany authors use photos of people in their item previews – it’s a great way to liven up your preview and make it real to buyers.

There are some things to consider in using photos of people, because those people might have something to say about how and where you’ve used their image! In short, we think the best way to get images of people is from reputable stock photography ”commercial use” collections. There are some other options, but this is the most straight forward one. Read on, and I’ll explain why. Continue Reading

Policy Update: User Avatars on Marketplaces

Copyright Sign Made of Jigsaw Pieces from Flickr

As all Envato Marketplaces authors are no-doubt aware, Envato has been educating users over the past couple of months on how best to avoid potential issues to do with copyright and intellectual property with their Marketplace items. Today I’m here to announce another update to our policy where users must update their Marketplace avatar to an image which lowers their risk of infringing on another’s copyright or intelectual property.

As of April 1, 2012 all Marketplace users must update their public avatar on the site to one of the following:

1) A picture of yourself
2) A picture of a pet or animal owned by you
3) A solid color or shade

Failure to comply with this may result in requests for proof of creative ownership over items in your avatar and or a model release, in the worst case scenario we may warn or remove users who do not comply with our requests.

Oh yeah, one last thing…. Happy April Fools! :D

AudioJungle Music Brings People Together

What tune did you march down the aisle to when you got married? Chances are it wasn’t an AudioJungle track. Shame on you.

But if you’re single, here’s a great idea for when you’re ready to tie the knot. Do what this couple did, and choose AudioJungle! Not only did they march down the aisle to a tune by Andy Slatter (Slats), they also featured it on their Flash wedding invitation (above). Now that’s a forward-thinking couple!

How to Find Creative Commons Content to Use in Marketplace Items

Licensing can be a complex, tricky business. That’s why Creative Commons was founded to help give content creators an easy way to distribute their work while specifying some simple factors such as whether the work could be used commercially or modified. Creative Commons licenses are perhaps most famous for their use on Flickr and Wikipedia. But really they are all over the place, with some half a billion items or more licensed under one of the CC licenses.

For Marketplace users, CC-licensed materials can be a great source of assets to use in item previews and even item downloads. In this post I’ll explain a bit about what kinds of licenses you should be looking for, where to find content, and what to avoid. Continue Reading
