About the Position

At Envato our mission is to help people to earn and to learn, online. We’re a young online company, internationally known in our market. Our marketplaces have millions of members who buy and sell digital goods and a network of educational blogs where millions learn creative skills.

The Envato Marketplaces are growing at an incredible rate! Not only has there been explosive growth among authors, but buyers are also signing up in droves. To stay ahead of that growth, we need ambitious, bright, knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff.  I’m proud to say that our current staff meets that criteria, but we need more!

Specifically, we’re looking for someone to come join the team as a Growth Officer. The growth team does exactly what it sounds like it does – we grow the marketplaces.  In short, we do that by discovering new item types, creating categories, filling those categories with quality content, and promoting them. This is a great opportunity and is no ordinary job. Continue Reading

Closing the AudioJungle TRAX Category

by posted in Authors, News

traxA couple of years ago we tried an interesting experiment on AudioJungle – the TRAX category. This category was different from the rest of AudioJungle, and the rest of Envato for that matter, in that we weren’t selling stock. Rather, the items were for the buyers’ personal use. Even though it wasn’t in line with our existing stock model, we wanted to have a place where AudioJungle authors could earn money from their music in a different way.

About the position

THIS POSITION IS NOW CLOSED, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY

We’re Envato and our mission is to help people to earn and to learn, online.  We’re a young online company, internationally known in our market.  We operate marketplaces where hundreds of thousands of people buy and sell digital items every day, and a network of educational blogs where millions learn creative skills.  You might be surprised to know that not only are we behind some of the biggest websites in Australia, we’re also profitable and growing really fast!

What you’ll be doing

•    Running competitions and “Most Wanted” campaigns
•    Working with authors to create seed for future categories
•    Writing articles to promote events
•    Creating and maintaining relationships with industry heavyweights
•    Working with accounting to make sure seed authors and competition winners get paid
•    Maintaining detailed statistics to identify our successes and failures
•    Identifying lucrative niches through statistical analysis

Essential Requirements

We’re looking for a whole lot more than just the ability to accomplish the above tasks. Here are some traits we’ll be looking for in a candidate:
•    Passion for the Envato community, buyers, authors, and staff alike
•    Excellent organizational skills
•    Attention to detail
•    Ability to find creative solutions to not-so-obvious problems
•    Project management skills
•    Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
•    Experience with and knowledge of the marketplaces is a huge plus, whether that be as an author, reviewer, mod, or just a community member
•    Though you don’t need to be a designer or developer, you must be intimately familiar with the industry
•    High level of initiative, independence and self-management in a remote working environment
•    Ability to collect, organize and communicate information and ideas clearly and from a remote environment

I’m interested!  What now?

If you have these traits and are excited at the prospect of joining the team, we’d love to hear from you!  Send a cover letter and resume via this form: https://www.formstack.com/forms/envato-growth_job_application
The following things will work in your favor:
•    A cover letter that talks about why you would be a good fit for this role, and gives us a sense of what you’re passionate about and what drives you.
•    A resume that shows us your strengths, rather than just listing everything you’ve ever worked on. (Long lists of acronyms will be frowned upon.)

Extended License Changes – Part 2

Note: This is a 2 part article. If you haven’t already read it, be sure to read part 1 first.

In part 1 we talked about various usages of items purchased with an extended license. In this part, we’ll discuss a couple of fringe cases that, after reading part 1, people tend to ask about, but it’s still worth clarifying.

If Item A is licensed under an extended license, and incorporated into a larger project, Item B, can Item B be offered for sale by Author B under an extended license?

Extended License Changes – Part 1

Copyright
On the Envato Marketplaces we don’t sell items, we sell licenses for those items. This is an important distinction and highlights how important those licenses are. They determine what rights authors grant and what buyers purchase.

Since we’ve had some interesting licensing questions come up recently, particularly around extended licenses, we’re rolling out a few changes to the license texts to make them more clear. This is part of an ongoing process to improve our licenses, so there will be more improvements to come. For any and all changes we’ll make sure everything is thoroughly explained for both authors and buyers.

AudioJungle: imitation, pastiches and copying

by posted in Authors
May 15
2012

Recently at Envato, we’ve been posting about various copyright and intellectual property issues.

We’ve now created a new KnowledgeBase article to help AudioJungle authors better understand what is and what is not acceptable on AudioJungle when it comes to ‘pastiche’ (imitation) recordings. You’ll find it here:

AudioJungle and Pastiche (Imitation) Tracks

AudioJungle authors, please take moment to read this article! The main points are that you are not allowed to directly copy, imitate or reproduce copyrighted audio recordings for your AudioJungle tracks. But it is permissible to incorporate general music styles into your composition.

It’s sometimes hard to know where to draw the line, so there’s more guidance in the article.

Remember, marketplace authors are always legally responsible for the content they submit to our marketplaces. Infringement of copyright may result in item disablement or in the worst case, account disablement for repeated violations of our Content Policy.

Existing AudioJungle items that don’t meet these requirements will be disabled if we become aware of them. So we ask all AudioJungle authors to review your entire portfolio and remove items that don’t meet copyright requirements.

If you have questions or comments on existing AudioJungle items (yours, or other authors’), please don’t share links here or on our forums. Instead, contact support here.

Happy composing!

Encrypting ActiveDen Files

by posted in General
Nov 13
2011

One of our primary concerns on ActiveDen, as well as the rest of the sites, is the security of your files. In fact, we have a group specifically dedicated to pirate hunting! That’s one of the reasons we’ve always encrypted files on ActiveDen. Tools like secureSWF and SWFEncrypt can really help prevent people from decompiling your files.

Unfortunately, there are some issues with ActiveDen reviewers doing the file encryption. Most importantly, file encryption isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. You really need to play with the settings to find the perfect balance between functionality and security for each individual file. That’s fine except that reviewers could never have the intimate knowledge of your file that you do. Sometimes a feature will break with encryption and the reviewer won’t even notice. That can be very frustrating for both authors and buyers. Some files take 3 tries before we get them to work which, unfortunately, slows down the queues and everyone in them.

Though it won’t be required, encryption will now be the responsibility of the author. This will not only speed up the queues, but also allow people to customize encryption settings to match each file.

Effective date: November 28th

For authors who don’t already have encryption software, I strongly suggest secureSWF. The ActiveDen team tried out a lot of software and this had the best balance between speed and security. They’ve been kind enough to offer a 25% discount to ActiveDen authors.

With tools like Unity 3d and markets like the App Store and Steam, building indie games is becoming not only easier, but also a whole lot more lucrative.
